Picnic and sports day

Our students joined those of the Oxford DTC for a picnic and sports day. Much fun was had by all!

Cheltenham Science Festival

Our year-2 cohort took their new ChemGolf game to the Cheltenham Science Festival, as part of the Southampton 'Bringing research to life' roadshow.

Poster prize

Congratulations to year-2 student Domagoj Fijan, who received a prize for his poster at the RSC Theoretical Chemistry Group Conference in Nottingham.

Team working course

Our year-2 cohort joined students at Warwick University for a three-day Team Working in a Research Environment course. The course, organised by Alison Rodger (Warwick) and Syma Khalid (Southampton), covered aspects of teamwork, scientific communication for a broad audience and identifying personal strengths and weaknesses. Our students were joined by the MAS CDT students from Warwick, and the diversity of scientific backgrounds added to the richness of the experience and was appreciated by all.

There was a friendly, collegiate atmosphere throughout as the students embarked on a range of practical and theoretical activities including building a wooden ‘matrix’ (which they achieved in a record time), working together to market a product for children of various age groups.

Open Day

We welcomed prospective TMCS students to our Open Day on Thursday 19th November. Students were introduced to the programme, our research, and our dedicated TMCS office space and facilities.

New cohort

We welcome our new 2015 cohort to the TMCS CDT.

The TMCS Prize

Congratulations to Jonathan Mannouch and Tim Wiles, who share this year's TMCS Prize for their outstanding performances in the assessed year-1 TMCS training programme!

All 11 members of the first TMCS cohort have successfully passed the MSc in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, as the culmination of their year-1 training. Four members of the cohort achieved distinctions: Dom Fijan, Jonathan Mannouch, Tim Naginey and Tim Wiles.

Congratulations to all!

Our year-1 cohort took part in a hands-on outreach and public engagement training day, delivered by Steve Dorney (Director of the Public Engagement with Research unit at the University of Southampton), Syma Khalid and Natt Day.

The course introduced TMCS students to possible routes for engaging with the public. They discussed how they could present their research to a range of audiences, and drafted an outreach plan for their cohort. Watch this space!

TMCS Open Day

The 2014 TMCS Open Day took place in Oxford on 27th November. Students from right across the UK attended the event, both to learn about the TMCS programme, and to meet our year-1 student cohort.
