Our students will engage in a one-year training course followed by a three-year period of research. Year 1 will take place at Oxford, with
training provided by staff from each of the consortium universities, and leading to the award of an Oxford MSc.

Some opportunities will be available to secure a specific three-year research project in one of Oxford, Bristol or Southampton Universities. Currently available specific TMCS research opportunities in Bristol and Southampton are listed here and here respectively.

During year 1, students not pre-committed will select a shortlist of supervisors with whom they are interested in pursuing  their main doctoral research project, listing 5 possible supervisors (including at least one from each university). While we expect to be able to fulfil most project preferences, and will strive to do so, the final decision on the project for years 2–4 will lie with the Leadership Team, and will take account of capacity in research groups and student performance.

TMCS is a national resource for training. Students from outside the consortium can apply to take the year 1 training programme (leading to the award of an Oxford MSc), before returning to their host institution for their PhD research project. Up to four such places may be offered annually.
